A little note about how dreams do come true.

This story may be a little cheesy but it is one that I would love to share with you. I hope that you see the positive message in it and that it puts a smile on your face, even if for a few seconds.

Although it started on a bit of a stressful note, 2011 has been an amazing year for me so far. It has in fact proven to be the best year yet.

Having recently been part of the celebrations at my old jewellery college (Kensington and Chelsea College), and welcoming in a new era for them, really made me think of the days when I was a first year student learning the ins and outs of jewellery making and design, and how far I have come in such a short time.

Why am I babbling on like this? Because, as time has passed, I have come to realise that dreams really do come true…

In around autumn 2003 during my first year at Kensington & Chelsea College, my jewellery tutor told us of an organisation called the ‘Clerkenwell Green Association’ and the open studios that they hold twice a year. She told us that as first year students it would be great to go and visit this wonderful organisation, so we can see how designer-makers set up their studios and also view the works that are being designed and made to gain a better understanding of the industry that we wanted to enter.

So there I went… off to Clerkenwell and visited all of the studios that were open throughout both of it’s buildings. I fell in love with the place. Especially with one particular workshop.

This workshop belonged to jewellery desinger and maker Olivia Schlevogt. I remember her sitting at her bench by the big gorgeous window in her gorgeous workshop, working away making the beautiful pieces that she still exhibits and sells at prestigious fairs like the Goldsmiths’ Fair even today.

Her work was beautifully displayed and I remember as a first year student being quite shy and not quite knowing what to say. I really wanted to tell her that her work is gorgeous and that I love her studio but I was too shy and couldn’t quite get the words out. I remember being stood in the doorway of her workshop and dreaming of the day that I would also have a workshop like hers.

Well, years have passed since, and the ‘Clerkenwell Green Association’ is now called ‘Craft Central’. I am now a full-time designer and my workshop is at… Craft Central!

In 2010, I excitedly moved into a shared workshop in this organisation. It was in the same building that Olivia’s workshop had been. I tried to remember which workshop it was that I had seen all those years ago and had fallen in love with so much. I couldn’t figure it out and I couldn’t find it… So I let the search subside and carried on with my own work.

Earlier this year, I moved from the shared workshop into my own studio. The day arrived when the contract had been signed, sealed and delivered, and the keys were given to me. I was handed the main set of keys and a few seconds after was passed the spare set…

I looked down into my hand to find a set of keys attached to a lone key ring with the words ‘Olivia’s Postbox’ written on it… I froze! I asked, “Who was in this studio before me, around 8 years ago?”… much to my surprise the response was “Olivia Schlevogt”…

Covered in goosebumps, I didn’t know what to say! I looked around at what was now my workshop and it all slowly started coming back to me… the big gorgeous window where the bench had been… the ledge on the side where all of the beautiful jewellery was displayed… That was the moment when I realised that dreams and wishes really do come true…

Of all the organisations, of the thousands of workshops that I could have ended up in, 7 years on, I am now working from the very same studio that I wished I had all those years ago… I still can’t believe it and feel like I am dreaming sometimes… especially when I walk into it every morning.

Life has its ups and its downs… we are all human and we all expeirence these ups and downs. I am so blessed to have a wonderful and supportive family and an equally wonderful and supportive group of friends by my side. I cannot express in words the extent of how grateful I am to have every single one of them in my life. My love goes out to each and every one of them… Thank you for being part of my life, thank you for being you! 🙂

I have also come to realise that if something is meant to be, it will be…

On this note, I leave you, thank you for reading my story, wish you the best and say…. let the positivity and love flow… dreams and wishes do come true! 🙂
